Hi everyone,

This is crazy. This is the wildest research story I’ve heard with AI. Yes, AI at Work is cool, but AI in Health? Omg.

AI + high-speed video can be used to detect your blood pressure and even diagnose diabetes. How? It does this by detecting variations in blood flows in your face.

Let’s get right into it.

AI and High-Speed Video Could Revolutionize Detection of High Blood Pressure and Diabetes

Intelligence: A novel system utilizing high-speed video and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm may enable quick, non-invasive screenings for high blood pressure and diabetes, according to a study to be presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2024.

  • The system uses a high-speed video camera to record images of the face and hands, which are then analyzed by an AI algorithm to detect conditions based on features of blood flow in the skin.

  • The method was found to be 94% accurate in detecting stage 1 hypertension, 86% accurate in detecting above-normal blood pressure from a 30-second video, and 75% accurate in identifying people with diabetes when compared to traditional testing methods.

  • The researcher suggests that this technology, once perfected, could be incorporated into affordable sensors or smartphones, allowing individuals to monitor their health at home.

  • However, validation of such technology is still needed. The accuracy of diabetes detection needs to be improved before seeking FDA approval for an at-home device.

  • The study has limitations, including its preliminary nature, potential applicability issues across different population groups, and potential differences in results due to lighting conditions or movement during data collection.
