Writer's New AI Model, Palmyra X 004, Outperforms Tech Giants in Function Calling
Intelligence: Writer's latest large language model, Palmyra X 004, marks a significant advancement in enterprise artificial intelligence, excelling in function calling and workflow execution to automate complex enterprise tasks.
Palmyra X 004 scored 78.76% on Berkeley’s Tool Calling Leaderboard, surpassing other models from tech giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta by nearly 20%.
The model also performed well on Stanford University’s Holistic Evaluation of Language Models (HELM) benchmark, indicating strong general language understanding and reasoning abilities across a broad range of subjects.
Writer achieved these results with a model containing around 150 billion parameters, significantly smaller than some other models, attributing this efficiency to the innovative use of synthetic data and a proprietary early stopping mechanism during training.
Palmyra X 004 has a 128,000 token context window and supports multilingual capabilities across 30+ languages. It can handle multimodal inputs including text, images, and audio.

Dead Animals Speak Up in Cambridge Exhibition, Courtesy of AI
Intelligence: In a unique application of AI technology, Cambridge University's Museum of Zoology is giving voice to its exhibits, allowing visitors to interact with deceased animals and learn their stories.
The technology was developed by Nature Perspectives, a company dedicated to using AI to strengthen the connection between people and the natural world.
The AI is programmed with specific details about each animal's life, habitat, and species information, and can adjust its tone and language based on the age of the person it's interacting with.
The animals can converse in over 20 languages and are given accents that reflect their natural habitats.
The project aims to change public perception of these animals and increase awareness of the biodiversity crisis.
The interactions between visitors and exhibits will be analyzed to better understand what information the public wants from museum exhibits.

News on AI, no-code, automation, and productivity
The use of synthetic data, or AI-generated data, in training artificial intelligence systems has been growing due to its promise of lower costs and mitigation of data scarcity. However, its risks, such as the amplification of biases, decrease in quality or diversity over time, and its potential to produce gibberish-spewing models, highlight the necessity of having human oversight in the process.
Despite only 12% of respondents using generative AI daily, this group appears to reveal four noteworthy traits: they tend to enjoy their jobs more, have found it boosts their individual efficiency, believe it forms a crucial part of their career progression, and are equally aware of its risks and rewards. This demonstrates the importance of both maximizing the benefits and minimising the threats of AI use in the workplace.
RunwayML has introduced a significant upgrade to its video model, Gen-3 Alpha, with a video-to-video tool that allows users to customize 'real world' videos using AI, such as altering the scene of a child playing outdoors to appear in an underwater kingdom or on an alien planet.
Hackers are utilizing sophisticated AI-based phishing attacks to target Gmail users, often posing as Google support technicians or using Google forms to appear legitimate. In response, Google has launched the Global Signal Exchange, an intelligence-sharing platform designed to provide insight into cybercrime and help disrupt fraudulent activities, while also recommending that users enroll in its Advanced Protection Program for added security.
Cloudflare’s Alissa Starzak highlights the challenge of regulating AI, emphasizing the need for a targeted and flexible approach that fosters innovation without compromising cybersecurity or stifling the global flow of information.
