Cohere Launches North, a New AI Workspace Platform Competing with Microsoft and Google

Intelligence: Toronto-based AI startup Cohere has launched an early access program for its new platform, North, claiming it outperforms Microsoft Copilot and Google Vertex AI in enhancing productivity for businesses through advanced AI agents.

• Cohere's North is positioned as an alternative to Microsoft Copilot and Google Vertex AI, focusing on retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).

• The platform is designed to connect with any business tool, including proprietary applications, allowing users to create, customize, and share AI agents easily.

• North can streamline business tasks in various departments such as HR, finance, IT, and customer support by automating data retrieval and processing through connected applications like Slack and Excel.

• Cohere cites benchmark tests indicating North's superior performance in RAG and usability compared to competitors, based on human evaluations and LlamaIndex tests.

• The company secured $500 million in a Series D funding round, achieving a $5.5 billion valuation; notable investors include Fujitsu, which partnered to develop Japanese language models. It also received $240 million CAD under Canada’s Sovereign AI Compute Strategy to support building a large AI data center.

 Nvidia Unveils Project Digits, a Personal AI Supercomputer for Developers

Intelligence: Nvidia is set to launch Project Digits, a compact personal AI supercomputer powered by the new GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip, aimed at democratizing access to advanced AI technology for developers and researchers.

• Project Digits is scheduled to launch in May with a starting price of $3,000, designed to fit on a desk and operate from a standard power outlet.

• Project Digits boasts 1 petaflop of AI performance, capable of performing 1 quadrillion calculations per second, and includes 128GB of unified memory and up to 4TB of NVMe storage.

• Users can connect two Project Digits units, allowing for AI models with up to 405 billion parameters, matching the capabilities of Meta’s Llama 3.1.

• MediaTek collaborated with Nvidia to optimize the GB10 chip’s power efficiency while maintaining high performance. The GB10 chip enables the system to run AI models containing up to 200 billion parameters, a capability that previously required larger and more power-intensive machines.
