OpenAI's New Deep Research Agent for ChatGPT Sparks Debate

Intelligence: OpenAI has introduced a new capability called "deep research" for its ChatGPT platform, aiming to enhance complex research tasks but raising concerns about its accuracy and potential impact on information reliability.

• Deep research is available to ChatGPT Pro users, allowing up to 100 queries within a month, with plans to expand to Plus and Team users.

• Designed for professionals in fields such as finance, science, and policy, deep research also aims to assist consumers in making informed purchases.

• Users can input queries and attach files, with responses taking 5 to 30 minutes. Current outputs are text-only, but additional features like images and data visualizations are planned.

• OpenAI acknowledges the imperfection of AI, with outputs thoroughly documented to aid verification. However, there are doubts whether this will sufficiently counteract AI's propensity to make errors.

• The new o3 “reasoning” model achieved an accuracy of 26.6% on a challenging set of expert-level questions, outpacing other models but still indicating room for improvement.
