Virgin Media O2's AI 'Granny' Outsmarts Scammers
Intelligence: British telecom company Virgin Media O2 has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot named Daisy, designed to engage and frustrate scammers by wasting their time.
Daisy mimics an older adult, a demographic often targeted by fraudsters.
The AI chatbot is capable of keeping scammers on the line indefinitely, engaging in aimless chatter, and providing false information.
This practice, known as "scambaiting," is intended to waste scammers' resources and potentially gather information useful for law enforcement.
Unlike human scam baiters, Daisy can operate 24/7, increasing the potential disruption to scammers' activities.
The introduction video for Daisy presents her as a photorealistic AI-generated elderly woman, complete with gray hair, glasses, and a penchant for knitting.

FACTS is designed to promote education and fun around sports analytics, drawing information from ESPN Analytics. This includes data such as the Football Power Index (FPI), player and team statistics, and game schedules.
FACTS is powered by Nvidia’s ACE (Avatar Cloud Engine), Azure OpenAI integration for language processing, and ElevenLabs for text-to-speech capabilities.
ESPN has made it clear that FACTS is not intended to replace journalists or other talent but to make analytics data more accessible and engaging for fans.

The European Union's newly implemented EU AI Act was designed to increase adoption and innovation in AI by establishing clear guidelines for businesses, aiming to maximize productivity while minimizing potential risks associated with AI. The risk-based regulation, which includes specific requirements for controversial General Purpose AI (GPAI) models and penalties for non-compliance, has been met with criticisms arguing it could stifle the prospects of AI entrepreneurs and hold back Europe's competitiveness against the U.S. and China.
Microsoft's AI business is booming, but with it, carbon emissions have soared by over 40% since 2020. So, to offset this, the tech giant, alongside the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), is investing in a Direct Air Capture (DAC) project developer, Deep Sky. Deep Sky is setting up a unique competition among eight startups to devise the most efficient and cost-effective carbon capture technology.

Elon Musk expanded his lawsuit against OpenAI to include Microsoft, alleging that the duo's close partnership aims to "monopolize the generative AI market". The amended suit has new accusations, like restraining investors from funding rival projects like Musk's xAI, exchanging sensitive competitive information, and suppressing competition. It’s clear that Musk is squaring up for a serious fight in the AI field as he continues to seek a more competitive and open market environment.
