Microsoft Launches Generative AI Model 'Muse' for Video Game Development

Intelligence: Microsoft has unveiled the first World and Human Action Model (WHAM), named "Muse," as a groundbreaking generative AI tool that enhances video game creativity and player interaction, published in the journal Nature.

• Muse is a generative AI model capable of creating game visuals, controller actions, or both, aimed at assisting human creatives in the game development process. Developed by teams from Microsoft Research Game Intelligence, Teachable AI Experiences, and Xbox Games Studios' Ninja Theory, the research combines expertise in AI and gaming.

• Microsoft is open-sourcing Muse's weights, sample data, and the WHAM Demonstrator, allowing other researchers and developers to access and experiment with the model via Azure AI Foundry.

• The project began after the release of ChatGPT, prompting the team to explore AI’s potential in gaming using extensive gameplay data from Ninja Theory's "Bleeding Edge."

• Creative input from real game developers was integrated early in the research process to ensure the model met the actual needs of the game's creative industry.

• Muse has been evaluated on three critical capabilities: consistency (accurate gameplay execution), diversity (varied player experiences from the same prompt), and persistency (retaining user modifications in generated sequences).

• Muse utilizes advanced machine learning techniques and high-performance computing resources (H100s) to improve output quality, including higher-resolution game visuals.
