OpenAI Cancels o3 in Favor of New Unified Model GPT-5

Intelligence: OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman announced the cancellation of the upcoming AI model o3, opting instead to release a more integrated model, GPT-5, as part of a strategic shift toward simplified product offerings.

• OpenAI no longer plans to launch o3 as a stand-alone model; instead, it will be integrated into GPT-5. Altman emphasized the need for simpler and clearer product structures, as the complexity of offerings has confused users.

• The new model aims to incorporate multiple functionalities, including voice interaction and advanced research capabilities and will be available at different levels of intelligence for subscribers.

• Before GPT-5, OpenAI will introduce GPT-4.5, codenamed “Orion,” expected in the next few weeks. Orion is described as the last of the company's non-reasoning models.

• Reports indicate that Orion has encountered performance setbacks, showing less advancement compared to previous models.
