McDonald's Ends AI Drive-Thru Trial Amid Automation Controversy

Intelligence: McDonald's has decided to end its experiment with artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in over 100 drive-thru locations, leading to questions about the fast-food industry's eagerness to implement such technology.

• McDonald's started testing AI-based automated order systems as part of a deal with IBM in 2021.

• With the introduction of new minimum wage laws in places like California, the fast-food industry is seeing the adoption of AI as a way to cut rising labor costs. However, the use of AI has also led to mistakes in orders, resulting in viral videos and negative media coverage.

• Some AI systems have been criticized for relying on outsourced human labor to function, with one company, Presto Automation Inc., admitting that human workers are involved in customer interactions about 70% of the time.

Significance:  The end of McDonald's AI trial suggests that the industry may need to reassess its approach to automation and its impact on customer service.

Intelligence: Forbes has accused the AI search startup Perplexity of stealing text and images, constituting a 'willful infringement' of Forbes' copyright rights.

• Forbes' General Counsel sent a letter to Perplexity's CEO accusing the company of stealing and using their content without proper attribution.

• The controversy began when Perplexity's AI chatbot reportedly replicated a Forbes article using other sourced reports, which were aggregated versions of Forbes' original content.

• Forbes has demanded that Perplexity remove the misleading articles, reimburse the company for advertising revenues earned via the infringement, and provide assurances that it will not repeat such actions.

• Perplexity, valued at over $1 billion and backed by industry leaders like Jeff Bezos, defended its actions, attributing the incident to a new product feature with 'rough edges.'
