California's Newly Signed AI Laws and Their Impacts
Intelligence: California Governor Gavin Newsom has recently signed eight of 38 proposed bills into law, addressing various concerns related to artificial intelligence, including deepfake nudes, AI-generated content, election deepfakes, and AI use in the film industry.
Two laws on deepfakes
SB 926 making it illegal to blackmail someone with AI-generated nude images that resemble them
SB 981 requires social media platforms to establish channels for users to report deepfake nudes that resemble them
Three laws aim to curb the influence of AI deepfakes on elections, with…
AB 2655 requiring large online platforms to remove or label such content
AB 2839 targeting social media users who share deceptive AI deepfakes
AB 2355 requiring explicit disclosures for AI-generated political advertisements.
Two additional laws…
AB 2602 and AB 1836, set new standards for the media industry by requiring studios to obtain permission before creating AI-generated replicas of actors or deceased performers.
SB 942, mandates AI systems to disclose AI-generated content in their provenance data.
Significance: These new laws highlight the growing concern over the misuse of AI and the need for governance in the industry. They set a precedent for other states and countries, influencing how AI is regulated on a broader scale.
