Meta's Oversight Board Probes Explicit AI Images on Instagram & Facebook
Intelligence: The parent company of Instagram and Facebook, is investigating two cases concerning explicit, AI-generated images of public figures that were posted on these platforms.
The cases involve a user-reported pornographic AI-generated image of an Indian public figure on Instagram and an explicit AI-generated image resembling a US public figure on Facebook.
Despite multiple reports, Meta failed to take down the explicit content from Instagram until the user appealed to the Oversight Board. On Facebook, the image was removed as it had been previously reported and added to a Media Matching Service Bank.
The Board aims to examine the effectiveness of Meta's policies and enforcement practices in different markets and languages, with a focus on protecting women globally.
Significance: This highlights the challenges of moderating content on social media platforms in the age of AI.
