OpenAI Launches New Responses API to Enhance AI Agent Development

Intelligence: OpenAI has unveiled a new Responses API aimed at aiding developers in creating more effective AI agents that can independently accomplish various tasks, responding to growing industry interest and expectations.

• The Responses API allows businesses to build custom AI agents using OpenAI’s advanced models, facilitating tasks like web searches and file management.

• This new offering replaces the Assistants API, which is set to be discontinued by mid-2026.

• OpenAI's GPT-4o search models feature high factual accuracy scores of 90% and 88%, surpassing the older GPT-4.5 model, which scored 63%.

• The Responses API provides a file search utility for quick information retrieval from corporate databases and includes the Computer-Using Agent (CUA) model to automate computer tasks.

• Despite improvements, AI agents still encounter issues such as inaccurate results (10% error rate) and challenges with navigational queries. OpenAI acknowledges that its agent technology is still evolving and not yet fully reliable.

• Alongside the API, OpenAI is releasing the Agents SDK, an open-source toolkit designed to help developers integrate AI models into their systems effectively and monitor their performance.
